Careers in psychology are perfect for individuals who are interested in the study and understanding of human behavior for the purpose of helping people. There are two critical relationships that careers in psychology study. Psychologists use numerous methods like experimentation, observation, and analysis. Because the science is still relatively new (about 125 years old), it is important for psychologists to constantly think outside the box for creative ideas to apply scientific findings.

Industrial and organizational psychology (I-O psychology) applies psychology to work places and organizations like non-profits, government agencies, for-profit businesses, colleges, graduate school programs, and universities. I-O psychologists help improve the performance of an organization’s staff, which directly contributes to the organization’s success.

A marriage and family therapist (MFT) is a relationship specialist who helps families and married couples deal with issues in their interpersonal relationships. MFTs are specially trained to diagnose and treat not only families and couples, but individuals as well. This includes child counseling, premarital counseling, separation or divorce counseling, and any other counseling that has to do with relationships.

Clinical psychology is the largest specialty area in psychology. Careers in clinical psychology involve assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness. Most clinical psychologists work in mental health facilities, hospitals, and private or group practices.

Careers in forensic psychology are great for those who want deal with the area where psychology and the law intersect. This career typically involves custody disputes, lawsuits, and insurance claims. Forensic psychologists also work in civil courts to conduct mental competency evaluations and provide assessments of adult and juvenile offenders.

Other great psychology careers for psychology majors are careers in child psychology. If you are interested in focusing on the social, mental, and emotional development of children, then a career in child psychology is perfect for you. Work involves focusing on and treating children in order to ultimately help improve their lives. It is extremely rewarding working with children, but it can also be exhausting. Because they are not fully emotionally developed and they do not have a full adult vocabulary yet, it can be difficult to encourage children to open up. Of all of the careers in psychology, this one may be the most important.
